Operational Considerations for AFADs

There are two primary ways to use Automated Flagging Assistance Devices in a work zone:

1. Dual AFAD Setup: Place an AFAD at each end of the work zone for fully automated control.
2. Hybrid Setup: Use an AFAD at one end and a flagger at the other.

In both setups, it’s usual to have two flaggers oversee the operation. Another option would be having a single flagger remotely manage both AFAD stations, provided they have an unobstructed view of each station and oncoming traffic from both directions.
